Darrel Marco:My Experience Volunteering with Sambat Trust 1/14/2014 Darrel Marco is a school librarian at Xavier School Nuvali, Laguna. Below Darrel shares his experience volunteering with Sambat Trust. *** Darrel reads 'Naku! Nakuu! Nakuuu!' When Ms. Zarah Gagatiga posted her plans for her next storytelling activities for Sambat Trust last October, I immediately volunteered as one of her tributes. Being a school librarian, who champions literacy and reading, I like to be more exposed to activities and programs that would further enhance my love for reading and literature. It was an opportunity to share my time and talent in telling stories to beneficiaries of Sambat Trust. I have always been curious about Sambat Trust- its advocacy and the work of the people behind it- as it had been shared and posted by Ms. Candy Gourlay and Ms. Zarah on social media sites multiple times. This was another reason why I wanted to do the storytelling- to share a story and know a story at the same time. I was really excited and totally looking forward to my first ever out-of-town storytelling with Ms. Zarah. Our plan, however, did not materialize because of bad weather. No hopes were gone, though. Ms. Zarah decided to move the storytelling to another time, two weeks after the original schedule. She oriented me that the event would consist of the launching of the school library of Laurel Elementary School, which got me all the more excited. With storytelling and opening a school library, nothing could be better than the smell of new books and the smiles of kids listening to a story. She also informed me that we would be joined by author Nanoy Rafael, and to my excitement, I borrowed his story ‘Naku! Nakuu! Nakuuu!’ from our school library. Darrel and Nanoy peep at the new school library like little kids excited to come in. The day finally came when we headed to Tanauan City in the province of Batangas. On the way to the city, Ms. Zarah and I had a little chat about Sambat Trust. She told me that it is an organization headed by the Mariano family, particularly Mr. Anthony Mariano, that pushes for the advancement of literacy in Tanauan. Of course, my follow-up question was, “Why Tanauan, Batangas?” To which she replied, “It is their beloved hometown.” It got me thinking, such a noble cause, and reflecting, what have I done for my hometown? We finally arrived in the city proper of Tanauan after about an hour of travel from Sta. Rosa City in Laguna. As the jeepney was about to stop, Ms. Zarah asked me if it was okay if we just walk to Jollibee to meet Nanoy and some representatives from Sambat Trust. It was not really that big of a problem with me despite the drizzles; as we were in the province, where the weather is cool and the air is fresh. What got me worried were the darkening clouds, but I just prayed for better weather. Then, we finally met Nanoy and two Sambat Trust representatives. I thought going to Laurel Elementary School would only take five minutes. Then I learned from Ms. Zarah that it is a 20-30 minute trike ride from the city proper. I didn’t want to be late as we were expected to be at Laurel at 9AM. Ms. Zarah asked me if I was ready for a ride, to which I replied, “Let’s go!”. We had a hard time looking for a ride because most of the drivers did not want to go to Laurel- which got me thinking why. After haggling with the tricycle drivers, my question was answered, for it was indeed a ride of a lifetime! From the city proper to barrios, to lines of factories, to rice fields and cornfields, to rough roads, hilly roads and muddy roads and expressways, and finally, to a majestic view of Mt. Makiling, we reached the humble barangay of Laurel. The PBBY Salanga Winning Story, Naku! Naku! Naku! (Adarna House, 2011) by Nanoy Rafael is all about a boy's anticipation of becoming an older brother. “I am really in the province!” were my first words. As a boy who grew up in the province, I am very familiar with the look of people whenever there are strangers in their town. I must say that the school really prepared for the program. Together with the students and teachers, the school library was opened with a ribbon-cutting by Nanoy Rafael and local community representatives. Teachers who were present at the time called for more students who lived in the neighborhood. Soon, there were more than a dozen of students present at the launching and turn over program. They looked excited to hear stories since the teachers told them that there would be storytelling sessions by Nanoy Rafael and myself. Oh, the power of stories! My goals that day were for the listeners to be able to connect to the story “Naku! Nakuu! Nakuuu!” and for me to give justice to the telling of the story, which is a recipient of the Peter Pan Award, while Nanoy listened and watched. So, I first unlocked the non-familiar vocabulary words. Then, I tried to contextualize the story by asking the children if they had any siblings, and they all enthusiastically replied: YES! Opo! What really fascinated me during the storytelling were the brightness of the eyes of the kids, even the older ones who were also listening. Every turn of the page, I read aloud to them without showing the picture. T hey would first imagine the scenes and then anticipate for me to flip the pages and show them the picture; then smile at the illustrations. It was really magical! After I read to them the story, I told them that they were very lucky because they would be able to meet the creator of the story. Librarian-Storyteller, Darrel Marco listens to a boy read aloud from a book at the new school library at Laurel Elementary School. So, I had a brief introduction of Nanoy and he took the floor by storm! I was impressed by how he demonstrated his inspirations in writing, to making one’s imagination work and to inspiring everyone to write their own story. It was a very relatable way of telling the process of writing a story, which was just like telling a story. It was indeed a fruitful day that left a sweet taste in my mouth. It made me realize that our lives are really full of stories weaved within stories, intertwined with stories that tell stories. Stories never fail to catch everyone’s attention. Stories also have a lasting effect. The challenge now for me I think is for students to be able to translate these stories to their own stories; to inspire; to share; to continue to reach out. 2013-14 Adarna House Catalogue 1/7/2014 Sambat Trust is proud to be partnered with Adarna House, the first and largest publisher of Filipino children’s books.
