Michael Jude Tumamac:How I Spent My Summer Vacation 7/1/2013 Classes started almost a month ago here in the Philippines. For sure, teachers asked their students to write or share in class how they spent their summer vacation. Expected answers to this question would be hitting the beach, visiting relatives in the province, reading books for leisure, watching TV programs and movies, and even sleeping. I could also describe my summer with those activities, and it would have been typical if I hadn’t committed my summer vacation to Sambat Trust. Three-Hour Trips Committing my vacation to Sambat Trust meant I needed to take three-hour trips to Tanauan City from Quezon City almost every other day for a month, starting from the third week of April until the second week of May. This also meant that six hours of my day were already lost on trips alone. The to-and-fro trip was actually twice the time I spent each day in Tanauan City. The frequent trips, however, did not discourage me because it was the only chance to see the six faces waiting for my arrival at Ms. Wilma de Rojas’ garage every 1 o’clock in the afternoon. My sessions with the six Sambat Trust scholars, who were incoming Grade 6 and 7, usually started with a review of the past meeting and a little sharing of things they did in the previous day. Our first session deviated from this routine as I first gauged their reading abilities after learning a few things about them. We then read picture books for the first two weeks and a novel for the last weeks. To enrich their reading skills, I let them do activities such as creating character profiles, making timelines, comparing characters, sketching scenes, etc. Reading the novel Tall Story posed challenges for all of us. It took us seven sessions to finish it. One challenge was unlocking cultural nuances presented in the novel. Another was understanding some words. Despite these, we enjoyed following Bernado and Amandolina Hipolito’s journey, whether in San Mateo or in London. They also had fun doing the post-reading activities, especially the one where they needed to make paper models of the characters based on the book’s description. We usually ended our reading sessions with the distribution of books they should read before the next meeting. Except for a few times that I gave them homework activities to process the book they would read, I let them read the take-home books for leisure. A portion of the following session would then be allotted for sharing their reading experiences. The last time they shared their reading experiences was on May 15, also our last day. Birthday for Books My commitment to Sambat Trust, however, did not end with the reading sessions. I also signed up for Birthday for Books 2013 , a campaign through JustGiving.com that aims to raise funds for the cause of Sambat Trust. Participating in this campaign means asking your family and friends to donate to Sambat Trust instead of having them send you gifts and cards. So, on May 24, my 23rd birthday, I asked my co-teachers at the Raya School (a progressive elementary school in Quezon City) to donate to Sambat Trust. I am thankful to our school director Ani Almario for relaying the campaign to my co-teachers. She also facilitated in passing around a box where they could put their monetary contributions. Most of my co-teachers, however, opted to give books that the foundation could use in filling up the libraries of the beneficiary schools in Tanauan City. The books included Filipino and foreign titles, fiction and nonfiction – all for children. One month on, I’m still collecting book donations from them. Others even expressed their intention of participating in future activities of Sambat Trust. Some also said they would love to take a look at the beneficiaries. It has been a month since I last visited Tanauan City. For sure, my summer students are now busy studying, acing their reading classes. I have to go back, not just to see once again their faces and to deliver the funds and books my co-teachers donated, but also to continue my commitment to Sambat Trust’s cause. I am truly blessed being involved in Sambat Trust. My experiences with them have enriched my growth as a person for others. Peter Watson Joins 20 Mile Walk 5/20/2013 Peter Watson jumped at the chance to join Malcolm on a 20 mile walk to Apps Court Farm, the venue for this year’s Barrio Fiesta sa London. Why? We emailed Peter to find out. From Peter’s first visit to the Philippines in July 2011. What inspired you to fundraise for children’s education in the Philippines? Melba, my fiancee, is from Iligan City in Mindanao. My first trip there was in July 2011, and then my second trip was in March 2012. Being in the Philippines was the best experience of my life; on both trips I was really touched by the hospitality shown towards me. But while I was there, I noticed lots of young children of many different age ranges asking me for money, which I gladly gave. These children were homeless; and just wanted food and a start in life. This experience made me very upset and sad- for me to walk 20 miles is nothing compared to what these young children have to deal with on a daily basis. If by walking 20 miles I can help the Philippines in a small way, through raising money, then so be it. 2. How did you hear of Sambat Trust? From Malcolm Conlan, who I am walking with on June 5th. 3. Is this your first 20 mile walk? Yes. I’ll be fine, don’t worry. Peter spends time with his fiancee, Melba, and her family in Iligan City, Northern Mindanao. 4. How's your training going? My training is going well. I cycle a lot,do weight training and eat a balanced diet...well, most of the time (haha). 5. Any advice for our readers who are thinking to start their own JustGiving fundraising event for Sambat Trust? If it’s your passion, and you love helping people, then go for it. You can support Peter. Malcolm Conlan is Raising Funds for Sambat Trust by Walking 20 Miles to Apps Court Farm, the Venue for Barrio Fiesta sa London 2013. 5/14/2013 The furthest Malcolm Conlan, a first aid trainer and assessor from London, has ever walked is 10 miles-he was limping for the next week! On the 5th June Malcolm plans to double that effort and walk 20 miles for Sambat Trust:from his home in Bromley,Kent to Apps Court Farm in London, the venue for Barrio Fiesta sa London 2013. We caught up with Malcolm to see how it’s all going. Malcolm is an active member of the UK’s Filipino community. The Philippine team float at The Lord Mayor‘s Show 2011. 1. What inspired you to fundraise for children's education in the Philippines? I first went to the Philippines when I was 18 and fell in love with the country and the people. I’m always struck by how friendly, polite and welcoming everyone is. After nearly 30 visits to the country,I feel as a British man married to a Filipina, it is my absolute duty to help. I believe that all children should have the same educational opportunities, regardless of what part of the world they happen to be born in. With his wife, Susan, a Filipina from Pangasinan, and their two lovely children. 2. How did you hear of Sambat Trust? I heard about Sambat Trust through Facebook and the great work and dedication of the charity founder, Anthony Mariano. Social media is a very powerful tool in helping to promote events and charities. I’m always happy to feature Sambat Trust on my website. Malcolm also runs Fil-Event.com, a site providing information about Filipino events around the world. 3. Is this your first 20 mile walk? Yes this is the first time I’ve ever walked 20 miles in my life. Two years ago, I decided to walk 10 miles to help raise money for the victims of Typhoon Sendong, which struck the Philippines so badly. By the time I finished the walk, I was limping and couldn't walk for a week! 4. How's your training going? Watching The Filipino Channel(TFC)and eating chocolate- so not too well I'm afraid(haha). Malcolm provides first aid cover at Barrio Fiesta sa London, the largest Pinoy festival in Europe. 5. Any advice for our readers who are thinking to start their own JustGiving fundraising event for Sambat Trust? It’s so easy to do. And Sambat Trust has been very supportive. I looked up the charity on the JustGiving website and set up a page, all started from there really. Started off as a bit of a crazy idea, however a friend of mine on Facebook,Peter Watson, has decided to walk with me and also support the charity. You can donate to Malcolm’s JustGiving page here. <<Previous
